Especially when the people who made the claim immediately doubted it. "A pretty good idea" is not the same as "knew for certain". Also interesting that this document specifically avoids mentioning how they came to this "estimation" and that other experts at the day didn't believe it anyway. I wasn't aware that people were capable of measuring the barrel diameter from blurry high altitude photos with no real frame of reference. However, these experts then proceeded to thoroughly play Devil's Advocate against their own position, claiming such a design was "impractical." Ship-design experts called in to consult estimated the ship at a minimum of 60,000 tons and noted that this huge size was necessary in order to mount nine 18-inch guns. ONI photo interpreters at the Photographic Reconnaissance Interpretation Section Intelligence Center (PRISIC) at Pearl Harbor correctly estimated that this ship was armed with 18-inch guns. These were processed by 25 February 1944 and one of them showed a Yamato class ship visible in one corner. On 4 February 1944, two B-24 reconnaissance aircraft overflew Truk, taking photographs.
